Basilicata, a land to discover

   


Lenght: 4 days/ 3 nights

First Day:
Arrival in Venosa. Visit of the well-known town especially to be the birthplace of the Latin poet Quinto Oratio Flacco, famous for its sentence “Carpe Diem”. It is possible to visit the Archaeological Park of Roman Age that preserves a thermal complex of the II century A. C. , a monumental amphitheatre and some Domus.
In addition, it is possible to see the Saint Trinity Abbey with the Church Incompiuta that dates back to the Medieval Age, XII century; then, while walking in the town centre you will see the Saint Andrew Cathedral, many fountains and washtubs and the so called Casa di Orazio (Oratio’s home).
Transfer to Melfi. Guided visit of the Federiciano Castle. This building has Norman origins that nowadays is enlarged and enclosed by walls and quadrangular and pentagonal towers alternated among them, that were built by Angevins in the 1266. It will be possible to visit the National Archeological Museum in which are preserved some findings dating among VIII – IV century B.C.
In alternative transfer to the Monticchio Lakes area for lunch in restaurant tasting a typical menu of the area and walking around the little lake.
Transfer to four stars hotel in the Matera province. Dinner and overnight stay

Second day:
Breakfast. Transfer to Matera. Arrival in Matera and meeting with the guide. Guided tour of the “Sassi” and stops to visit: an ancient house dug into the tuff that nowadays became a potter’s workshop (demonstration of the lathe of clay  processing), the house-cave typically equipped with furniture of rural culture, and all the locations of “The Passion” the Mel Gibson movie, the historical centre, the Romanesque Cathedral. Lunch in restaurant. In the afternoon visit of the archaeological museum and of the Medieval and Modern  Art of Lanfranchi  Palace.
Return in hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Third day:
Breakfast. Transfer to Metaponto. Visit of the archaeological area that, thanks to its Palatine Tables, represents an important evidence of the several Greek colonies that used to live on the Ionic Coast. Lunch in hotel. Transfer and guided visit of Pietrapertosa, a very characteristic village settled among the rocks under the suggestive peaks of the Lucan Dolomites. Here, it will be possible, for those who want, to live an amazing and unique experience: the Angel Flight. A steel cable, suspended between two villages peaks, let you fly between Pietrasanta and Castelmezzano, watching beautiful landscapes with a view that usually only birds can see. Return in hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Forth Day:
Breakfast. Transfer to Pollino National Park. It will be possible to arrive to Piano Ruggio by bus (1.500 metres), and then to continue by walk up to the Belvedere of Malvento. This excursion will make you cross the big plateau of Ruggio and reach the Belvedere site where, in addition at the wonderful and breathtaking view, it is possible to see the  Loricati Pines. In  this occasion it will be possible to talk of geomorphology, general ecology issues and above all thanks to the Loricato Pine talking about the endangered species and biodiversity protection. The excursion will let you see beech woods, grasslands rich in flowers, above all in spring, water springs and streams. Lunch in refuge on Pollino or in a restaurant in Rotonda. Departure to places of origin.
